Hot Stone Massage Moonee Ponds

What is hot stone massage?

Hot stone massage uses smooth, water-heated basalt stones placed on key points of the body and held in the therapist's hand as an extension of their pressure. Basalt is a volcanic rock that holds heat for an unusually long time, so the warmth penetrates deep into the muscle without the therapist having to dig in hard. The result is an unusual combination of profound relaxation and genuine therapeutic benefit — most clients describe it as the most calming massage they've had.

Who is it best suited for?

Hot stone is the right choice when you're carrying chronic tension that doesn't fully release with regular massage, when cold weather has stiffened up your back, neck and shoulders, or when you'd love a deep-tissue treatment but find a hard-pressure massage uncomfortable. It's particularly effective for:

  • Tight, knotted shoulders from desk work or driving
  • Lower-back stiffness and sacral tension
  • Stress-related muscle holding (jaw, neck, between the shoulder blades)
  • A comforting warmth for cold hands and feet
  • Difficulty winding down or sleeping

It's not recommended during pregnancy, with high blood pressure, recent surgery, diabetes-related neuropathy or any condition that affects skin sensation. Let us know about any health conditions during your booking and we'll guide you to the most appropriate treatment.

What happens in a hot stone session at eWellbeing

Sessions run for 45, 60 or 90 minutes — a targeted Back & Shoulders treatment (45 minutes, $85) or a whole-body session (60 minutes, $110; 90 minutes, $160). In a whole-body session, after a brief intake covering any pain, injuries or recent stress, you'll lie face-down on a warm table. The therapist begins with traditional Swedish-style flowing strokes to relax the surface tissue, then introduces the heated stones — placed strategically along the spine, shoulders and lower back — and uses them in slow, gliding motions to work deeper into the muscle. The treatment alternates between stones and hand massage, finishing with the body face-up so the legs, arms and chest receive the same care.

The basalt stones are heated to roughly 50-55°C in a professional-grade heater — warm enough to be deeply effective, never hot enough to mark the skin. Our therapists check in with you on heat comfort and pressure throughout.

Hot stone vs deep tissue — which should I book?

If you want firm pressure with focused work on specific painful areas, deep tissue or remedial massage is usually the right call. If you want the deepest sustained release across the whole body without the intensity of strong manual pressure, hot stone is what you're after. Many clients alternate the two across visits, or combine them — book hot stone for the relaxation depth, but tell the therapist if there's a specific issue (e.g. a stubborn knot in the rhomboid) that needs targeted attention.
